'SOME KIDS NEVER GET OUT OF THEIR OWN NEIGHBOURHOOD'

It is Wednesday night at Diamonds in the Ruff boxing gym in the Washington DC suburb of Forestville and a group of young fighters - from pre-teens to early 20s - are being put through their paces by coaches Umar, Tony and Tairhan.

At the end of 2024 some of them had the chance to visit County Mayo in the Republic of Ireland where they trained, sparred and socialised with youngsters from Ardoyne Holy Cross Boxing Club in north Belfast.

LIMERICK BOXER RISKS LIFE TO SAVE WOMAN FROM DROWNING

A HERO Limerick boxer risked his own safety on Sunday when he dropped 20 feet into the waters of the River Shannon to save a drowning woman.

Professional fighter and Limerick Treaty Suicide Prevention (LTSP) ambassador, Lee Reeves, had just returned from a training session in Belfast on Sunday when he went out with the local river patrol group.

All day the spotters had been looking out onto Pennsylvania Ave. — a few blocks from where a CVS was emptied by looters then burned on national television Monday — to see if the neighborhood would erupt again. Gervonta “Tank” Davis was in the middle of having his hands taped to prepare for a workout, but he sprinted out of the Upton Boxing Center to see what was happening.

THE WP: BOXING EVENT HELPS DISADVANTAGED YOUTHS FROM NORTHERN IRELAND, D.C.

Bernard Cairns was all of 17 when he climbed the scaffolding inside Holy Cross Church in Belfast and hanged himself. Earlier that day in 2003, Cairns had attended the funeral of a close friend, another suicide victim, at the same Catholic chapel where he chose to end his life, becoming the latest in an alarming trend in Northern Ireland’s capital.
